The Temporary Work (Skilled) visa, also known as subclass 457, permits skilled workers to enter Australia and work for an authorized business for up to four years.

Eligibility for this visa requires sponsorship by an approved Australian business. The primary goal of this visa is to help Australian businesses address labor shortages in their respective industries.

A business may sponsor an individual for this visa if they are unable to find a suitable Australian citizen or permanent resident for the skilled position.

Applicants can be either in Australia or overseas when submitting their application.

Essential Requirements

To apply for this visa, you need to fulfill the following essential requirements:

  • You must be nominated for a role listed on the Skilled Occupation Lists (Previously known as Form 1121i).
  • You must demonstrate your skills for the nominated role by providing the necessary documents. Additionally, a skills assessment may be required depending on your occupation.
  • You must fulfill any registration and licensing requirements, which your sponsoring employer should provide.
  • You must have vocational English proficiency, as determined by tests like IELTS or OET, depending on your occupation.
  • You must be nominated by an approved business.
  • You must meet health requirements and have adequate health insurance, unless covered by Medicare.
  • You must meet character requirements.
